On first try for me. A big part of the route is forced. Only last section can bring a bit to think.

For me personally, this board has nothing to solve, because route is forced for about 95% of it. Globally, the initial configuration doesn't let any ambiguity as where to go to. Side note: from start location, the mandatory crossing over already consumes more than 20 steps for nothing. If starting closer to target, and allowing more entries into center section, the board would win in ambiguity.

A bit the same problem than the other: as soon as wandering a bit away from target, amount of steps is already exceeded, so it tells straight where to go.

hmmm... the amount of steps vs. size of the board is a key to the solution in itself, eliminating any ambiguity as where to go. Idea is nice though. Resizing (route vs. board size) to allow a bit more ambiguity would make it more interesting.
Going from various 45s to the 43 here was very cool for me. Shame the other routes are not very enticing.
Wow, nearly every section is tricky to optimize, with one being particularly crazy
