Logic gave me the key to win on first try: 10 x 10, start in one corner, target in the diagonally opposed one, so shortest possible route requiring 18 steps. That's only 2 steps reserve for picking up one block with us... Well, that's pretty straight. :D

I think this is a fairly good elementary level, with lots of 22-step paths. Not sure what the author's path was, though. :))
